✦ The portion this week
Portion summary
Nasso opens with the final census of the Levitical clans — Gershon and Merari — each assigned specific burdens for transporting the tabernacle. The portion then turns to purity within the camp, the law of restitution, the strange test for a suspected unfaithful wife, and the vow of the nazir, one set apart to the LORD through abstention, uncut hair, and separation from death. It gives us the priestly blessing Aaron is commanded to speak over Israel, and closes with the twelve tribal leaders bringing identical, lavish offerings for the dedication of the altar — after which the LORD speaks to Moses from above the mercy seat.
The thread of the parashah
What binds these seemingly disconnected laws — carrying poles, jealousy offerings, vows of separation, twelve nearly identical gifts — is the question of what it means to be near the dwelling place of God without being consumed by it. The Kohathites carry the holiest objects on their shoulders precisely because they must not touch them directly; the Gershonites and Merarites carry the outer frame and coverings. Each Levite clan has a burden fitted to its proximity to holiness. So too the individual Israelite: the nazir who wishes to draw nearer than the ordinary calendar of feasts allows takes on restrictions — no wine, no razor, no contact with death — because closeness to the LORD is never casual. Even the tribal leaders, bringing offerings for twelve straight days, each identical down to the shekel, show that access to the altar is neither hierarchy nor improvisation but an ordered gift. The parashah's hidden unity is this: nearness to God is always structured, assigned, and costly, never generic proximity.
The haftarah
Judges 13 gives us a nazir not by voluntary vow but by divine appointment from the womb — Samson, set apart before birth for a deliverance he would only partly complete. The angel's instructions to Manoah's wife echo Numbers 6 almost verbatim: no wine, no unclean food, no razor. But where the Torah's Nazirite vow is a temporary, self-chosen intensification of holiness, Samson's nezirut is permanent and imposed — a life bound to a purpose larger than himself. The haftarah shows the pattern extended: God does not merely legislate consecration, He sometimes speaks it directly into a womb, previewing a deliverer whose story will end unfinished, pointing forward to one whose consecration will not fail.
Messiah in the portion
In Acts 21, Paul stands in Jerusalem among believers "zealous for the law," and to quiet rumors that he taught Jews to abandon Moses, he joins four men completing a Nazirite vow, paying their expenses so their heads can be shaved according to Numbers 6:18. This is no theological compromise — it is Paul honoring the very structure Nasso lays out, showing that life in Messiah does not erase the Torah's patterns of consecration but inhabits them. Yeshua himself is never called nazir in these texts, yet the whole logic of Numbers 6 — separation unto the LORD, bearing a burden no one else carries, refusing what is permitted to others for the sake of a greater calling — finds its deepest shape in him who was set apart from the womb, as Samson was, but whose separation unto death and beyond did not fail like Samson's. The blessing of Aaron in Numbers 6:24-26 — the LORD's face shining, His countenance lifted — is what Paul, shaved head and all, still sought to walk in, even after Messiah, because the blessing was never revoked.
For the week
Ask what specific burden is yours to carry this week — not everyone's, not the Kohathites' holy vessels nor the Merarites' tent pegs, but the one assigned to you. Consider one restriction, however small, that would mark this week as set apart rather than ordinary. Then speak Aaron's blessing over someone in your household before the week ends.

Aliyah 1 · Numbers 4:21-37
4:21 And the LORD said to Moses, 4:22 “ Take a census of the Gershonites as well, by their families and clans, 4:23 from thirty to fifty years old, counting everyone who comes to serve in the work at the Tent of Meeting. 4:24 This is the service of the Gershonite clans regarding work and transport: 4:25 They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting with the covering of fine leather over it, the curtains for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, 4:26 the curtains of the courtyard, and the curtains for the entrance at the gate of the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, along with their ropes and all the equipment for their service. The Gershonites will do all that needs to be done with these items. 4:27 All the service of the Gershonites — all their transport duties and other work — is to be done at the direction of Aaron and his sons; you are to assign to them all that they are responsible to carry. 4:28 This is the service of the Gershonite clans at the Tent of Meeting, and their duties shall be under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. The Duties of the Merarites (Numbers 3:33–37; 1 Chronicles 23:21–23) 4:29 As for the sons of Merari, you are to number them by their clans and families, 4:30 from thirty to fifty years old, counting everyone who comes to serve in the work of the Tent of Meeting. 4:31 This is the duty for all their service at the Tent of Meeting: to carry the frames of the tabernacle with its crossbars, posts, and bases, 4:32 and the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes, including all their equipment and everything related to their use. You shall assign by name the items that they are responsible to carry. 4:33 This is the service of the Merarite clans according to all their work at the Tent of Meeting, under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.” The Numbering of the Levite Clans 4:34 So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the congregation numbered the Kohathites by their clans and families, 4:35 everyone from thirty to fifty years old who came to serve in the work at the Tent of Meeting. 4:36 And those numbered by their clans totaled 2,750. 4:37 These were counted from the Kohathite clans, everyone who could serve at the Tent of Meeting. Moses and Aaron numbered them according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
Aliyah 2 · Numbers 4:38-49
4:38 Then the Gershonites were numbered by their clans and families, 4:39 everyone from thirty to fifty years old who came to serve in the work at the Tent of Meeting. 4:40 And those numbered by their clans and families totaled 2,630. 4:41 These were counted from the Gershonite clans who served at the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron counted at the LORD ’s command. 4:42 And the Merarites were numbered by their clans and families, 4:43 everyone from thirty to fifty years old who came to serve in the work at the Tent of Meeting. 4:44 The men registered by their clans numbered 3,200. 4:45 These were counted from the Merarite clans, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the LORD ’s command through Moses. 4:46 So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel numbered by their clans and families all the Levites 4:47 from thirty to fifty years old who came to do the work of serving and carrying the Tent of Meeting. 4:48 And the number of men was 8,580. 4:49 At the LORD ’s command they were numbered through Moses and each one was assigned his work and burden, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Aliyah 3 · Numbers 5:1-10
5:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 5:2 “ Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body. 5:3 You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.” 5:4 So the Israelites did this, sending such people outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses. Restitution for Trespasses (Luke 19:1–10) 5:5 And the LORD said to Moses, 5:6 “ Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty 5:7 and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution, add a fifth to its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged. 5:8 But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest along with the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him. 5:9 Every sacred contribution the Israelites bring to the priest shall belong to him. 5:10 Each man’s sacred gifts are his own, but whatever he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.” The Adultery Test
Aliyah 4 · Numbers 5:11–6:27
5:11 Then the LORD said to Moses, 5:12 “ Speak to the Israelites and tell them that if any man ’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 5:13 by sleeping with another man, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act), 5:14 and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself — or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself — 5:15 then he is to bring his wife to the priest. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, an offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity. 5:16 The priest is to bring the wife forward and have her stand before the LORD. 5:17 Then he is to take some holy water in a clay jar and put some of the dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 5:18 After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse. 5:19 And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse. 5:20 But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and have defiled yourself and lain carnally with a man other than your husband’— 5:21 and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse —‘ then may the LORD make you an attested curse among your people by making your thigh shrivel and your belly swell. 5:22 May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and cause your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen, Amen.’ 5:23 And the priest shall write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water. 5:24 He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and cause her bitter suffering. 5:25 The priest shall take from her hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD, and bring it to the altar. 5:26 Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water. 5:27 When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, her thigh will shrivel, and she will become accursed among her people. 5:28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children. 5:29 This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority, 5:30 or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law. 5:31 The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.” 6:1 And the LORD said to Moses, 6:2 “ Speak to the Israelites and tell them that if a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the LORD, 6:3 he is to abstain from wine and strong drink. He must not drink vinegar made from wine or strong drink, and he must not drink any grape juice or eat fresh grapes or raisins. 6:4 All the days of his separation, he is not to eat anything that comes from the grapevine, not even the seeds or skins. 6:5 For the entire period of his vow of separation, no razor shall pass over his head. He must be holy until the time of his separation to the LORD is complete; he must let the hair of his head grow long. 6:6 Throughout the days of his separation to the LORD, he must not go near a dead body. 6:7 Even if his father or mother or brother or sister should die, he is not to defile himself, because the crown of consecration to his God is upon his head. 6:8 Throughout the time of his separation, he is holy to the LORD. 6:9 If someone suddenly dies in his presence and defiles his consecrated head of hair, he must shave his head on the day of his cleansing — the seventh day. 6:10 On the eighth day he must bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 6:11 And the priest is to offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to make atonement for him, because he has sinned by being in the presence of the dead body. On that day he must consecrate his head again. 6:12 He must rededicate his time of separation to the LORD and bring a year-old male lamb as a guilt offering. But the preceding days shall not be counted, because his separation was defiled. 6:13 Now this is the law of the Nazirite when his time of separation is complete: He must be brought to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, 6:14 and he is to present an offering to the LORD of an unblemished year-old male lamb as a burnt offering, an unblemished year-old female lamb as a sin offering, and an unblemished ram as a peace offering — 6:15 together with their grain offerings and drink offerings — and a basket of unleavened cakes made from fine flour mixed with oil and unleavened wafers coated with oil. 6:16 The priest is to present all these before the LORD and make the sin offering and the burnt offering. 6:17 He shall also offer the ram as a peace offering to the LORD, along with the basket of unleavened bread. And the priest is to offer the accompanying grain offering and drink offering. 6:18 Then at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the Nazirite is to shave his consecrated head, take the hair, and put it on the fire under the peace offering. 6:19 And the priest is to take the boiled shoulder from the ram, one unleavened cake from the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and put them into the hands of the Nazirite who has just shaved the hair of his consecration. 6:20 The priest shall then wave them as a wave offering before the LORD. This is a holy portion for the priest, in addition to the breast of the wave offering and the thigh that was presented. After that, the Nazirite may drink wine. 6:21 This is the law of the Nazirite who vows his offering to the LORD for his separation, in addition to whatever else he can afford; he must fulfill whatever vow he makes, according to the law of his separation.” Aaron’s Blessing 6:22 Then the LORD said to Moses, 6:23 “ Tell Aaron and his sons: This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: 6:24 ‘ May the LORD bless you and keep you; 6:25 may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 6:26 may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace.’ 6:27 So they shall put My name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
Aliyah 5 · Numbers 7:1-41
7:1 On the day Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, he anointed and consecrated it and all its furnishings, along with the altar and all its utensils. 7:2 And the leaders of Israel, the heads of their families, presented an offering. These men were the tribal leaders who had supervised the registration. 7:3 They brought as their offering before the LORD six covered carts and twelve oxen — an ox from each leader and a cart from every two leaders — and presented them before the tabernacle. 7:4 And the LORD said to Moses, 7:5 “ Accept these gifts from them, that they may be used in the work of the Tent of Meeting. And give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service.” 7:6 So Moses took the carts and oxen and gave them to the Levites. 7:7 He gave the Gershonites two carts and four oxen, as their service required, 7:8 and he gave the Merarites four carts and eight oxen, as their service required, all under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. 7:9 But he did not give any to the Kohathites, since they were to carry on their shoulders the holy objects for which they were responsible. 7:10 When the altar was anointed, the leaders approached with their offerings for its dedication and presented them before the altar. 7:11 And the LORD said to Moses, “ Each day one leader is to present his offering for the dedication of the altar.” 7:12 On the first day Nahshon son of Amminadab from the tribe of Judah drew near with his offering. 7:13 His offering was one silver platter weighing a hundred and thirty shekels, and one silver bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel and filled with fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 7:14 one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; 7:15 one young bull, one ram, and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; 7:16 one male goat for a sin offering; 7:17 and a peace offering of two oxen, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs a year old. Thus the LORD spoke to him.
✦ Haftarah (Prophets)
13:2 Now there was a man from Zorah named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, whose wife was barren and had no children. 13:3 The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “ It is true that you are barren and have no children; but you will conceive and give birth to a son. 13:4 Now please be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, and not to eat anything unclean. 13:5 For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no razor shall come over his head, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines.” 13:6 So the woman went and told her husband, “ A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name. 13:7 But he said to me, ‘ Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from the womb until the day of his death.’” 13:8 Then Manoah prayed to the LORD, “ Please, O Lord, let the man of God You sent us come to us again to teach us how to raise the boy who is to be born.” 13:9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her. 13:10 The woman ran quickly to tell her husband, “ Behold, the man who came to me the other day has reappeared!” 13:11 So Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he asked, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?” “ I am,” he said. 13:12 Then Manoah asked, “ When your words come to pass, what will be the boy ’s rule of life and mission?” 13:13 So the angel of the LORD answered Manoah, “ Your wife is to do everything I told her. 13:14 She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.” 13:15 “ Please stay here,” Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “ and we will prepare a young goat for you.” 13:16 And the angel of the LORD replied, “ Even if I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For Manoah did not know that it was the angel of the LORD. 13:17 Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “ What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes to pass?” 13:18 “ Why do you ask my name,” said the angel of the LORD, “since it is beyond comprehension?” 13:19 Then Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the LORD. And as Manoah and his wife looked on, the LORD did a marvelous thing. 13:20 When the flame went up from the altar to the sky, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell facedown to the ground. 13:21 And when the angel of the LORD did not appear again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized that it had been the angel of the LORD. 13:22 “ We are going to die,” he said to his wife, “ for we have seen God!” 13:23 But his wife replied, “ If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.” 13:24 So the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the LORD blessed him. 13:25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him at Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
✦ Brit Hadashah (Renewed Covenant)
21:17 When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us joyfully. 21:18 The next day Paul went in with us to see James, and all the elders were present. 21:19 Paul greeted them and recounted one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. 21:20 When they heard this, they glorified God. Then they said to Paul, “ You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. 21:21 But they are under the impression that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or observe our customs. 21:22 What then should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come. 21:23 Therefore do what we advise you. There are four men with us who have taken a vow. 21:24 Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses so they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that there is no truth to these rumors about you, but that you also live in obedience to the law. 21:25 As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they must abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.” 21:26 So the next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he entered the temple to give notice of the date when their purification would be complete and the offering would be made for each of them. Paul Seized at the Temple
