Classic Spanish (Reina-Valera 1909)

Y todos los bueyes del sacrificio de las paces veinte y cuatro novillos, sesenta los carneros, sesenta los machos de cabrío, sesenta los corderos de un año. Esta fué la dedicación del altar, después que fué ungido.

English

All the livestock sacrificed for the peace offering totaled twenty-four bulls, sixty rams, sixty male goats, and sixty male lambs a year old. This was the dedication offering for the altar after it was anointed.

What the text says

Summary

This verse closes the list of offerings brought by the tribal leaders for the dedication of the altar, giving the totals of animals designated for the peace offerings (shelamim, H8002): 24 bulls, 60 rams, 60 goats, and 60 year-old lambs. It concludes by naming this collection as the dedication of the altar, occurring after the altar's anointing.

Key words

  • Khol ("all", H3605) — construct singular, opening the verse as a summary heading for the totals that follow, linking to bekar as "all of the cattle of."
  • zevach ("sacrifice of", H2077) — construct singular, forming a chain with hashelamim ("the peace offerings", H8002) to specify the category of sacrifice these cattle belong to.
  • parim ("young bulls", H6499) — plural noun following the number esrim ve'arba'ah ("twenty and four", H6242/H0702), one of four animal categories counted.
  • zot ("this", H2063) — demonstrative particle introducing the closing summary clause, pointing back to the entire preceding list as a single referent: "this [is]."
  • himashach ("was anointed", H4886) — niphal infinitive construct, expressing passive/reflexive action ("to be anointed") in a temporal clause introduced by acharei ("after", H0310A), with the direct object marker oto attached despite the passive form.

What the text says

The verse is structured as a tally: it opens with khol bekar zevach hashelamim ("all the cattle of the sacrifice of the peace offerings", H3605/H1241/H2077/H8002), a construct chain that sets up the category being counted, then lists four groups of animals each paired with its numeral — parim ("bulls", H6499), eilim ("rams", H0352A), atudim ("goats", H6260), and kevasim benei shanah ("lambs, sons of a year", H3532/H1121H/H8141) — each totaling either 24 or 60. The repeated numeral shishim ("sixty", H8346) for rams, goats, and lambs creates a rhythmic parallel structure distinguishing them from the 24 bulls.

The closing clause uses zot ("this", H2063) as a summary demonstrative, followed by chanukat hamizbeach ("dedication of the altar", H2598/H4196), another construct chain. The temporal clause acharei himashach oto ("after it was anointed", H0310A/H4886/H0853+H9033) uses a niphal infinitive construct — grammatically passive, "to be anointed" — yet still carries the direct object marker oto ("it", H0853+H9033) referring back to the altar, a construction where the object marker attaches to a passive verbal form.

Differences between versions

The LXX renders parim ("bulls", H6499) as δαμάλεις ("heifers/young cows"), a feminine term, where the Hebrew parim is a masculine plural noun for bulls. The LXX also adds the phrase "μετὰ τὸ πληρῶσαι τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ" ("after filling his hands"), an idiom not present in this Hebrew verse, alongside its rendering of himashach oto as "μετὰ τὸ χρίσαι αὐτόν" ("after anointing him"). The Vulgate omits the opening phrase corresponding to khol bekar zevach hashelamim ("all the cattle of the sacrifice of the peace offerings"), beginning instead directly with "In hostias pacificorum."
