✦ What the text says
Summary
The verse lists the four sons of Qehat ("Kohath", H6955) — Amram (H6019G), Yitzhar ("Izhar", H3324), Chevron ("Hebron", H2275B), and Uzzi'el ("Uzziel", H5816G) — and states the total length of Kohath's life as 133 years, expressed through the sum of three number words.
Key words
- venei ("[the] sons of", H1121A) — masculine plural construct noun, opening a genealogical list bound to the following proper name.
- shenei ("[the] years of", H8141) — masculine plural construct, paired with chayyei to form the construct chain "years of the life of."
- chayyei ("[the] life of", H2416E) — masculine plural construct noun, dependent on Qehat, together with shenei producing the idiom "years of the life of Kohath."
- shalosh ("three", H7969) and shloshim ("thirty", H7970) — cardinal numbers joined by the conjunction u- ("and", H9002), added sequentially to build the total.
- me'at ("one hundred", H3967) — feminine singular construct cardinal, the largest unit in the additive number sequence, followed by shanah ("year", H8141) as the counted noun.
What the text says
The verse divides into two syntactic units joined by ve- ("and", H9002). The first is a construct chain, venei Qehat ("sons of Kohath"), followed by a simple listing of four names connected by repeated ve- conjunctions — a common structure in Hebrew genealogies where no verb is needed to establish the relationship; the construct noun itself supplies the meaning "belonging to" or "of."
The second unit reports Kohath's lifespan using a double construct chain, shenei chayyei Qehat ("years of the life of Kohath"), literally "years of life of Kohath," a formula also seen elsewhere in Hebrew genealogical notices. The number itself is built additively: shalosh ("three") + shloshim ("thirty") + me'at ("hundred"), each joined by ve-, then followed by the counted noun shanah ("year"), placed at the end even though the number is large — reflecting the Hebrew convention of the counted noun following the full numeral sequence rather than modifying each part separately.
Differences between versions
The Hebrew list includes four sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. The LXX text given here names only three — Ἀμβράμ, Χεβρών, and Ὀζειήλ — with no equivalent for Yitzhar ("Izhar", H3324) appearing in this Greek text. The Vulgate (VULCLEM) includes all four names, matching the Hebrew list, rendering Yitzhar as "Isaar." The LXX text as given also does not supply the numeral for Kohath's lifespan, ending with "ἔτη" ("years") without a stated number, whereas the Hebrew, Vulgate, and modern translations (RV1909, BSB, SBLIBRE) all state the figure as 133 years.
